Yukon Quest musher Hugh Neff mushes his dog team down the starting chute in Whitehorse yesterday under clear skies and with temperatures of about -20 degrees Celsius. There are 25 mushers competing in the 28 running of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race. It will take the winning team a little over 9 days to mush the 1,000 miles from Whitehorse, Yukon, to Fairbanks, Alaska. Having followed the race for several years in the past, it’s great to be back and reconnect with many familiar faces. The Yukon Quest is so much more than a dog race. It’s an event that celebrates the spirit of the North and transcends the border that separates Alaskans and Yukoners.
