Last Friday, I picked Florian up right after school and we drove out to Mendenhall Lake. We put our skates on and quickly skated across the mostly smooth surface of the lake to near the face of the glacier, with our six-month-old puppy Bay in tow. The sun had set in the western horizon but there was just enough light left to check out some of the ice caves before darkness set in. Only the loud cracking sounds of expanding ice was shattering the silence near the glacier. We headed back at dusk, the last ones still skating on the lake, happy to have been able to skate for several miles on awesome lake ice and to have experienced the magical ice caves near the Mendenhall Glacier.
