The weather was absolutely gorgeous yesterday, which was a good reason for me to get my backcountry skis and skins out and head up to the top of Eaglecrest on Douglas Island. There is more snow now that I saw all winter up there.

Yesterday was the first bluebird day at Eaglecrest Ski Area on Douglas Island in a long, long time. Impossible to resist skiing in this magical winter wonderland.

Logan Miller, age 8, performs a 180 ski trick at Eaglecrest Ski Area near Juneau. Logan and our son Florian became skiing buddies this winter, and enjoy freestyle skiing and practicing their 180′s, 360′s, ‘Spread Eagle’ and other ski tricks together. Here’s a video I made of some of their tricks:

It’s been great returning to ski with family and friends at Eaglecrest. The weather has been wonderful lately and there are still such masses of snow up there that it’s hard to believe the resort will close in three weeks. The rime ice encasing the trees at the top makes me feel like we are still in the deep of winter.

Saturday happened to be another one of these magical skiing days. High above the fog, we welcomed the sun, carved turns in fresh powder, and simply enjoyed each other’s company and the freedom of the hills. Here, Florian skis down the west side of Douglas Island through pristine snow in a magic winter wonderland.

The last sun rays of the day illuminate the Coast Mountains yesterday afternoon in the view from Pittman Ridge at the top of the Eaglecrest Ski Area on Douglas Island. The top of the Ptarmigan chair lift is visible on the far right. It’s wonderful to witness alpenglow colors again – it’s been a while!

The Eaglecrest Ski Resort opened its season on Friday, and according to avalanche forecaster Mike Janes the top of Eaglecrest currently has with over 100 inches the highest snow accumulation of any ski area in the Western Hemisphere! Here, Florian tries a back scratch at the ‘Blowhole’, one of his favorite jumps.

It was a little eerie to wander around the deep snow and fog up at Eaglecrest on Douglas Island the other day, and to see the empty chairs blowing in the wind at the top of Black Bear and Ptarmigan. At higher elevations, winter is definitely closing in fast. The new ski season seems to be just around the corner.
