There are two good reasons to go to Mendenhall Lake right now. First, a series of calving events on both the east and west side of the terminus of Mendenhall Glacier released a lot of ice into the lake, and I haven’t seen such an abundance of icebergs in the lake in a while. Second, and equally important, some of the balsam poplar trees and willow shrubs still have their fall foliage, adding a welcome touch of color on otherwise often grey October days in Juneau. But the fall colors are quickly fading around the lake, so don’t wait too long.

I have been editing some of my recent images from Denali National Park, and this one stood out not because it’s a striking picture but because it summed up in many ways my experience up there. The shadow of Greg Lahaie’s Cessna 206 is small even in this relatively close range. The tapestry of color in the tundra was simply gorgeous, especially the bright yellow among the willow shrubs. The trails on the left edge of the picture were created by caribou, the great nomads of the North. It’s a magical time to be at Denali National Park for the peak of the fall colors, and I feel lucky that the timing was right this time around.
